Falkirk basketball legend Jonny Bunyan will be honoured with a special testimonial match this weekend.

Held at Playsport Arena in East Kilbride, the home of Bunyan’s former British Basketball League professional side Caledonian Gladiators, the event tips-off at 3pm on Sunday with a ‘Rocks Gladiators’ team facing off against a ‘Rocks Fury’ team, paying homage to Jonny’s contribution to both the Gladiators and his hometown team Falkirk Fury, who he recently saw out the season with.

Under the tutelage of his dad John, he helped Fury seal a historic SBC treble trophy winning campaign after making the switch from the Gladiators mid-season in order to see out his career in Falkirk – back where it all started.

At the Gladiators, he led the club to BBL Trophy glory last March, with that triumph marking the club’s first silverware in over 20 years. Gladiators last picked up a major victory back in the 2002/03 campaign when Keith Bunyan, Jonny’s older brother, helped lift the play-off title.

After 13 seasons, 424 games, he finished second all time in games played just behind current head coach Gareth Murray, with a career 40 per cent shooting mark from beyond the arc.

Jonny also still acts as community development officer for the professional BBL side off the court.

Proud dad John said: “Jonny is an inspiration to our younger players and it is great that he is still working with Caledonia Gladiators, helping build their development programme.

"Jonny has had a tremendous career to date in the professional game and was a hugely popular figure with the Glasgow Rocks and latterly the Caledonia Gladiators’ organisations.”

Former players and current stars who have played alongside Jonny will take to the court on Sunday, including the likes of former former GB Olympic athlete Kieron Achara.

He said ahead of the event: “I am so chuffed to be playing in Jonny’s testimonial. I was honoured to be asked along and Jonny is a real role model and ambassador for basketball.

"He is great servant to the game and especially to the Gladiators and previously Glasgow Rocks. I’ve been trying to get into shape!”

Tickets are on sale via Caledonia Gladiators’ social media.
