A five-year-old boy who fled Ukraine with his mother was one of those who attended a vigil for his homeland in Falkirk today.

Little Maltsev Andrii is from the port city of Kherson in Ukraine. With his mum Alyona Maltseva they remained in Ukraine for the first five months of the war before coming to the UK and now live in another port town, Grangemouth.

From March to November 2022, the city was occupied by Russian forces during their invasion of Ukraine. Ukrainian forces recaptured the city on 11 November 2022.

The mother and son were at the vigil for Ukraine organised in Falkirk Trinity Church where people were invited to come along when they could and sit in quiet reflection.

It was one of a series of events across the UK to mark the first year of Ukraine’s invasion by Russian, including a national minute’s silence held at 11am.
