A devoted dad brought smiles to the runners and crowds at Falkirk Half Marathon on Sunday but few knew the poignant story behind his unusual companion.

Craig Russell, 49, carried a giant 5ft Aldi Kevin the Carrot backpack around the 13.2 mile course. But his reason for hoping to catch the attention of others with the supermarket mascot was to raise awareness of three vital charities – Bone Cancer Research Trust, Teenage Cancer Trust and Glasgow Children’s Hospital.

All three proved a help and support for Craig and his family when his son Gavin was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma in 2014, aged only 13. A rare type of cancer, it affects bones or the tissue around bones mainly in children and young people, but is also seen in adults. It's more common in males than females.
